The Department was established in 1948 with the commencement of the Three Year Undergraduate General Degree Course which later paved the way for Honours Course in 1996. The Department boasts of eminent scholar Faculty in the far and near past in the likes of Hitendra Mohan Ghosh who was a leading film and drama critic and published his writings in "The Frontier" and "Darpan" , later in "The Statesman" and Rabindranath Sarkar whose spiritual insights on Anukul Thakur have been a hallmark in religous discourse. Some of the esteemed Faculty members have graduated to University teaching positions and Principals of colleges At present we are trying to carry on the legacy with continuous striving to develop critical thinking in the age of overwhelming technology through English Language and Literature hand in hand.
To make students aware of the importance of Literature and Language as a tool and discourse for them to shape their ideology and the active consciousness to make impact on social changes and make them ready for industrial exposure at large.
The unique feature of the department is our Literary Society named Chrysanthemum. The society organizes year long events within the department to develop critical and performative skills amongst the learners through peer learning.
